These are the steps and notes for setting up Ruby version manager on my machine (Mac 10.6.6)

  1. bash < <( curl http://rvm.beginrescueend.com/releases/rvm-install-head )
  2. next I opened my ~/.profile file with gedit and put this line at the end and saved
    1. [[ -s “$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm” ]] && . “$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm” # This loads RVM into a shell session.
  3. I tested in a new terminal with  “type rvm | head -1”  — if you get rvm is a function you are good to go
  4. rvm get head
  5. rvm install 1.8.7
  6. rvm system ; rvm gemset export system.gems ; rvm 1.8.7 ; rvm gemset import system  #all on one line in the terminal
  7. rvm –default 1.8.7   # this will set the default to a RVM installation instead of system
  8. to revert to system just “rvm system”
  9. rvm install 1.9.2
  10. rvm use 1.9.2
  11. gem install rails
  12. RubyMine allows you to now select which version to use and which set of gems if you create separate gemsets
  13. rvm –default use 1.9.2
  14. $ rvm –create 1.8.7-p174@rails2tutorial
  15. $ rvm –create use 1.9.2@rails3tutorial
  16. rvm use 1.9.2@rails3tutorial
  17. rvm list #to see what is installed
